There are a lot of website platforms out there and it is true that it’s become fairly simple to DIY a website. With friendly interfaces and templates it can be as easy as uploading a few photos and text to be done in a couple of hours. But just because you can do something it doesn’t mean you should. So why go with WordPress when there are so many easier platforms out there?
I am not here to say all the other ones are no good, because that’s not true. The truth is, they all have their pros and cons and it’s up to you to decide what works best for what you are looking for.
There are a lot of reasons WordPress may be the best choice for you, so let’s dig in the biggest ones:
Truth be told, if you know your way around WordPress there’s very little you cannot accomplish here. WordPress powers over 41% of websites and it’s the top choice for both small business and services providers, and huge companies like BBC and Walt Disney. This should tell you a little bit of how broad it’s capabilities are.
And choosing WordPress from the beginning is a great option even if all you need at the moment is a simple website. Reason being that you will have a website that can grow as your business grows and save yourself some future headaches.
Ok, but what does that actually mean? It means that WordPress is not really owned by a single person or company. It was built as a community of developers and it is maintained the same way. It’s code is open and free for anyone to see, modify and use. A big plus of this is that bugs and issues can be quickly fixed as there are thousands of developers committed to keeping WordPress great.
A downside is that it’s more vulnerable to hackers. This is by no means unavoidable though. With good security measures and a good host, your site will be absolutely fine!
It’s also important to note that even though WordPress itself is free, there are some costs involved in having a website. Every WordPress Site needs a domain name and a web hosting.
Domain Name - your web address, what users type to find your website. For example, my domain is julianatoriello.com. Prices and availability varies here, but unless you want a very competitive domain name, you’ll probably be paying around $10 a year for this.
Web hosting - where your website lives on the internet, what makes it accessible online. Prices can vary from as little as $1/month to $60/month. It all depends on what you need, but for most websites you can get really good hosting under $15/month.
SEO (search engine optimization) is basically a strategy implemented on your website that will help it get more traffic and rank higher on Google searches for example. WordPress was built using high quality code and this makes search engines love WordPress sites. It also means your site will be already optimized out from the box.
Regardless, there are also some really good SEO plugins that will help your site improve it even more and it’s highly recommended to use it. It’s very important to note that there are a lot of SEO bad practices out there that will hurt your reputation long term. SEO is not about tricking search engines to show your content first. It’s about following some guidelines that will ensure you have good enough content and user experience. And that is what will make search engines trust you and boost your page up.
All that being said, common cons people find with using WordPress is the bigger learning curve and the not so friendly interface. That is true, WordPress does take some time to get used to and if you choose to build the website yourself you might spend more time than you’d like doing so.
If this is not your area of genius and you’d rather spend your time doing what you actually love and know, I am more than happy to give life to your vision!
I want your site to be yours though, and if this is something you want to do I offer as a part of my packages a few training videos made specifically for your website so you can make small changes on content and keep your site updated if you wish to do so.
